During this month in Poland, I learned that city council and different organizations (also NGOs) have a big proposition for activities directed to seniors, for example language courses, dance courses, courses of using phone and computer for the elderly, etc.
In Turkey the seniors have another life and opportunities, but of course, these are due to our cultural and social differences.
As I did not find a lot of information connected with special opportunities for seniors in Turkey, but I know that there are hundreds of courses in training centers, including English language, sign language, diction training, reading and writing training, handicrafts and sporting activities which are open to people of all ages, mostly these courses are free. Furthermore, the elderly in Turkey usually likes to knit. Meeting with friends is indispensable for them. Seniors in Turkey also want to spend time with their grandchildren and their families. Usually We are always together with our elderly, we do not leave them alone. In families, we are going out all together, cook and host guest all together. In addition, our elderly usually stay to live with their children. They get up very early in the morning. My grandmother wakes up with the sunrise :) she stays with one of her child every month. We are very happy when she stays in our house. I love to listen stories about her young years. My grandmother is love with all grandchildren with great compassion. I would never break her heart.
I think that seniors living in the families of their children shows a respect for the elderly in Turkey. Disrespect for the elderly is not welcome at all in Turkey. If we see someone who mistreat an elderly person, we will react, it makes us feel that we are their supporters.
Of course there are a lot of differences between life of seniors in Poland and Turkey. We are two different countries. The elderly in Poland more active in social life and spend their time more on activities than seniors in Turkey. On the other hand seniors in Turkey spend almost all their time with their children and grandchildren with showing their care and
warm feelings.
I like old people very much. Life has experienced them but anyway they try to show us the beauty of life. Their lives and stories are a light for our future.
