MY PERFECT 1-ST MONTH IN GDANSK!
Dzien Dobry :) I came to Gdansk a month ago for my volunteering project in frame of the European Solidarity Corps program. I live with 3 excellent flat mates who are also international volunteers. I am very lucky that we are both work and live together. Also, my project coordinators, Reneta and Olena, helped me to get used to this city. They answered every questions that i had in my mind without getting tired . They were with me in the process of organizing and getting used to my first activities.
I love my work in the hosting organization. I provide classes of Turkish language, cooking workshops for teaching how to cook traditional Turkish dishes, gymnastic and dance class for seniors so I am quite busy.
Turkish lessons are very enjoyable. Turkish is a difficult language, but my students are very excited to use it. We discovered that some words in Polish and Turkish languages are similar. With my gymnastic and dance group, group of seniors, although most part of them do not speak English we
use body language and have a lot of fun together. It is very pleasant to be with them, I recognized that teaching is fun for me. My senior’s group learn dancing movements very quickly. Now they are very good in both gymnastic and salsa.
Making workshops for cooking club is the most fun part of my volunteering. Me and my colleague Arif teaching locals how to cook traditional Turkish dishes, we cook and eat together. Turkish food is often spicy and have a lot of salt, but participants likes it. On last meeting we were about 14 participants and volunteers and we sat together for a few hours and chatted .
I very like and enjoy Gdańsk, this small and sweet city. It’s calm and have a lot of interesting things for me. Im am also taking Polish lessons. Learning Polish is a bit difficult for me, but I so all my best and think I will do it.
Getting to know a new culture and being in this culture gives me great experience. I can observe both the history and the culture of Poland.
I spent 1 month of my volunteering project very fast, but full of new and interesting things and experience. I am sure there will be more.
Your volunteer, Tugce
