CALL FOR 2 VOLUNTEERS FROM POLAND FOR PROJECT IN GREECE!
Our partner, organization from Greece is looking for 2 Volunteers who would like to join European Solidarity Corps-Project for six months at Greek sheepdog Breeding and distributing Center located at Northern Greece in Florina region.
Mobility starts from 1-st of May for 6 months.

Partner organization: ARCTUROS is a nonprofit organization for the protection of wildlife and the natural environment. From the first years of its operation, ARCTUROS focused on conservation efforts for big carnivores in Greece (Bears, wolves. The Greek sheepdog can be really efficient in preventing those kinds of damages. The aim of the Center is the harmonious human-wildlife coexist in rural areas and also the preservation of the Greek sheepdog tribe where it was near to extinction. The breeding program is implemented in modern facilities in Aetos village in Florina region, which include 10-12 breeding areas, a common exercise area.
The volunteers will participate in activities such as:
- Feeding and daily care for the 15 dogs of the Center;
- Cleaning the premises, equipment, dogs grooming;
- Dogs training and daily walks/exercise with the dogs;
- Visits to veterinarians (where necessary);
- Care of the Greek sheepdog puppies;
- Assist in Wolves feeding (twice a week).
Other upkeep duties:
- Cleaning the wolves Sanctuary from bones once a month
- Cleaning the surrounding area (from rubbish) of the center and also the river once a month
- Harvest fruits from the trees from the surrounding area, once a week (the period end of spring-beginning of summer)
- Visit a shepherd (if is needed) and check the dog livings conditions on the farmers that have taken a puppy from ARCTUROS (on-site check control)
- Watering the trees of the center (every day)
Volunteers will spend a day familiarizing themselves with the Arcturos facilities (Bear Sanctuary, Wolf Sanctuary) and will then receive training from staff in order to participate in the Greek Sheepdog Volunteer Program.
Applicants to the Volunteer Program must:
- Have the willingness to contribute to Environmental protection through project.
- Willingness to work in the environment with animals (Animal Care, Veterinary Assistance). Be comfortable with and not scared of dogs. Of course, volunteers will not be required to approach or work with dogs considered ‘difficult’.
- Be willing to carry out manual tasks, such as cleaning the dog’s living areas.
- Be in good physical condition. Walking each dog takes between 20 and 30 minutes and takes place on rough country paths and mountain trails.
- Be cooperative with staff and other volunteers, have the willingness to work in a team.
- Be willing to work outside in the heat, in summer, and in the cold and rain in winter.
- Have a passion for their work and be initiative.
- Think creatively and be willing to carry out multiple tasks.
- Be adapted/ flexible and coping with new challenges.
- Share responsibility for living together with a multinational team of volunteers and under various conditions.
- Must be 18-30 years old.
- Have to know English (at least basic) in order to communicate with the other members of the team
- It is not required volunteers to have specific educational or professional qualifications.
Volunteers will:
- Gain work experience in animal care and veterinary assistance (proper management and care to ensure dog welfare).
- Be informed about the selection process of distributing puppies to rural areas (right selection choice of the shepherd and future dog owner).
- Learn about Environmental management practices and sustainability.
- Learn new language and culture (Greek language and civilization, customs, traditions etc.)
- Meet new people from all over the world, enhance socialize, networking, interpersonal and social interactions abilities.
- Improve English linguistic level.
- Enhance responsibility.
The volunteers will be hosted in the hostel for volunteers situated at the village of Aetos down at the valley (Florina region). The house can host 7 to 8 persons. It has bedroom, main living room, two baths and a fully equipped kitchen. Aetos is a small and quiet village but you can find anything you need there.
Mentor: Volunteers will have a mentor, the person who give the personal support.
Pocket money: 5 euros/day (about 150 euros per month.)
Money for food: 7 euros per day for food.
The organization is covering transport from the place that they’re going to live to the place that they will work (by ARCTUROS car).
